Tungsten and Tungsten Alloys

Specs: QQ-B-750, MIL-T-21014, ASTM-B-777, ASTM-B-702, ASTM-B-139

Tungsten is a naturally occurring rare element known by the name of Wolfram. In raw form, it is very brittle but becomes quite workable once purified. Methods of working can be: forging, drawing, or extruding. Tungsten alloys can also be made through a process called sintering.

Tungsten is most often alloyed with other metals to meet specific needs. One example is tungsten copper which is created for its heat and ablation resistance. Tungsten copper is easily machined and both thermally and electrically conductive making it great for electrochemical machining and electric resistance welding. Common applications of tungsten copper are electrical contacts and heat sinks.

At Wieland Diversified, we have American sourced tungsten which makes it compliant with the new Unite States Code Section 2533c and available for use in all government and military applications.

Recent changes to Subchapter V of chapter 148 of title 10, United States Code indicate that there are significant prohibitions on the acquisition of Tungsten. According to section 2533c, there are a large number of countries that tungsten can not be purchased from if the intended use has military applications. Wieland Diversified is compliant with section 2533C because all our tungsten is sourced in the United States.

Tungsten has numerous applications ranging from penetrating projectiles to incandescent light bulbs. It’s hardness and high density make it ideal for military use.

In free element form, tungsten has the highest melting point at 6192 F (3422 C) and a boiling point of 10705 F (5930 C). It has a comparable density to gold at 19.3 times denser than water and a very high tensile strength. Tungsten in its poly-crystalline form is intrinsically brittle and hard. However, pure single-crystalline form is ductile enough to be cut with a hard-steel hacksaw.

Tungsten’s high melting point and strength at high temperatures make it suitable for aerospace applications. Many Alloys of tungsten allow you to tailor it to many very specialized uses.
